His older brother Emile knows the mission is a fool’s errand, and his attempts to leave Lucien behind give the reader a tragicomic intuition. He imagines his “triumphant return to Grenada”, where he grew up as a slave in a hospital run by British colonisers. With the bluster of a teenage boy who wants to be considered a man, Lucien gladly accepts the mission ordered by his master, a French monk. It is a fitting choice of narrator for Jane Harris's third novel Sugar Money, which charts the perilous journey of two slave brothers from Martinique to Grenada in the 18th century to recover 42 slaves their French master claims were stolen by English invaders. Inadequate is a more appropriate description of a character who is entirely trustworthy despite his or her lack of understanding. The unreliable narrator, as Mullen points out, denotes an element of deception. The Guardian literary critic John Mullan coined the term in relation to the protagonist of Mark Haddon's bestselling novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.Ī teenager with Asperger’s syndrome, Christopher can’t understand the messy marriage of his parents, requiring the reader to figure out the curious incident themselves. The reader must themselves deduce what the narrator can't understand. Like their beloved fictional cousin the unreliable narrator, the inadequate narrator of a novel draws the reader into a tale by forcing them to take an active role in the plot.

They discuss their respective forefathers, and Chingachgook relates the slow demise of his tribe of Mohicans so that only he and his son Uncas now remain. The Indian and the scout are attired according to their forest habits: Chingachgook with his semi-nude, war-painted body and scalping tuft of hair, his tomahawk, scalping knife, and short rifle Hawkeye with his hunting shirt, skin cap, buckskin leggings, knife, pouch and horn, and long rifle. In another part of the forest by the river a few miles to the west, Hawkeye and Chingachgook appear to be waiting for someone as they talk with low voices. I thought I'd try and do something from a different angle and say, "You know, comics can do this as well". I'm sure your questions will cover this, but we've had the past ten years of creators using comics as a showcase for the fact that they can actually write convincing TV and movie scripts and I just thought – enough! I enjoy all those books but I wanted to read something a bit more day-glo. It's trying to reclaim the raw and the primitive and the 'who gives a f-k, this is the s-t!' element of superhero comics, if that makes sense. I was trying to go for something that was like music or poetry instead of like prose. Grant Morrison: It's kind of like cubism, you know? I've seen some of the complaints and I must admit I've become a bit defensive and almost feel I'm constantly trying to explain things to people who won't like it, no matter how much I bang on. IGN Comics: So let me just begin by saying that to prepare for our discussion, I read all of Final Crisis and Superman Beyond in one sitting last night, and I was pretty taken aback at just how dense the whole series was.
